Dark Pandani and Dark Dinning @ The Henry Jones Art Hotel
12 June – 12 August 2015
The Pandani is the largest heath plant in the world and is only found in Tasmania.
Painting the Pandani initiated my discussion of gender ambiguity within the garden. The pandani became an anthropomorphic figure that blocked your access into the space, a sentinel; its unclear if the form is friend or foe. Male or female, the pallet makes associations to femininity yet the form is defiant and strong, the back lighting and the darker framing of the paint pour strongly reference the stage and the photograph. However as I continued to visit the site in Mt Field becoming more familiar with the space and the Pandani, the form slowly stepped away from being represented to more allusive and suggested.
