Finalist 2022 Woman's Art Prize Tasmania

I am thrilled to be shortlisted for the 2022 Finalist Exhibition of the 2022 Women's Art Prize Tasmania. There are some amazing women in the lineup that I both respect and am delighted to call my friends. This should be a great show and I am privileged to be included. Happy International Woman’s Day !

Freedom in Restraint – Quinacridone Burnt Orange and Chrome Yellow Hue, 2021

Artist Statement

Freedom in Restraint is what ‘lockdown’ looked like for me. By limiting my palette to two hues plus white, I forced my own lockdown in painting.  It was my intention to find beauty in restraint and to exhibit these works constrained by wire but free to relate to one another.

Penny Burnett’s paintings focus on our relationship with space and nature. Recently (post-Covid) her practice has concentrated on the relational nature of colour through the practice of restricting her palette to only a few pigments plus white.

Burnett’s work has been exhibited across the east coast of Australia, Malaysia and Korea.  She has selected for a number of Australian prizes and residencies including the Calleen Art Award (2021), Muswellbrook Art Prize (2020 people’s choice), Ravenswood Art Prize (2021) and Bay of Fires (2018 winner). Residencies include Poimena, Launceston (2021), Cradle Mountain (2019) and Artspace IAa, Jeju Island, South Korea (2018).
