Uncharted Studio mussings
“Whatever we make is love offering, it comes from a spirit of generosity, especially for the marginalised. Beauty and Justice is connected” Makoto Fujimura
What does that mean? How can I be generous in the studio? My works has increasingly become more focused on time, silence, mystery, inner questions and wonder. What does Ezekiel’s a shinning man look like? How do you paint what you feel rather than what you see? And what exactly is colour ? Is it a thing or is it purely relational? Is it there an absolute colour or truth? What is truth ? Can any of this be discovered in solitude, without context or is it relational… - a person, character, something only revealed with time and interaction …. How is beauty and justice connected ?

I’m noticing my creative drive is very scattered. Studio work is becoming internalised - the blue glazed work is nearly finished, the three together sing, they throb with intensity and depth.
When I walk in nature I notice colours, contrasts, relationships. The she-oaks in flower with ochre tips swaying with blue leaves on the headland. But is that enough to try and recreate in the studio, I don’t know, somehow is just looking, seeing, experiencing is rich enough. This tension between figurative and abstraction keeps pulling at me. Is it time to listen to the trees?
Trees don’t question their identity , trees don’t question their purpose, trees don’t question their placement. Trees just grow, they breathe, testify to time, give, endure, adapt, produce, die and then nourish. The good book says people are like trees, maybe I need to look to the trees.
